Custer National Forest

Custer Gallatin National Forest provides one of the most diverse ecosystems in the Northern Region. The forest spans from the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness close to Red Lodge, Montana to the open countries of South Dakota. This massive forest contains the tallest mountain in Montana, known as Granite Peak. This giant mountain climbs up to 12,799 ft making it an attraction to hundreds of climbers every year and considered to be one of the most challenging high-points to conquer in the lower 48 states.

Another natural wonder that occurs in the Custer National Forest is the Grasshopper Glacier. What gives this phenomenon its unique title is the millions of grasshoppers encapsulated in the glacial ice. Over the years, visitors of the glacier have been able to find their own preserved grasshopper from the ice. Although, recent times of light snow during the winter to hot summers melting away at the ice, many grasshoppers have finally been exposed to the environment and have started to decompose.
