Tribes of Montana

There are a total of 7 Native American reservations throughout the state of Montana  each with its unique history and culture. Within these reservations are 12 different tribes The United States of America has recognized as nations by executive orders and treaties used to distinguish the 7 reservations. The state is primarily inhabited by the Assiniboine, Gros Ventre, Crow, Northern Cheyenne, Blackfeet, and Salish and Kootenai tribes. The Blackfeet Nation, located in the northwestern part of the state, is known for its strong warrior tradition and relationship with the land. The Crow people, great horse riders and hunters, have a rich cultural history in the southeastern region. The Northern Cheyenne, closely related to the Lakota, have deep roots in the central plains, while the Assiniboine and Gros Ventre tribes have traditionally lived in the northeastern part of Montana. The Salish and Kootenai tribes, located in the western part of the state, have strong cultural ties to the natural world and are deeply involved in conservation efforts. Each tribe has contributed significantly to Montana's cultural landscape, enriching the state's history and heritage.
